Goals and Objectives
- Define COPD and briefly summarize its pathogenesis.
- Discuss the use of spirometry in primary care practice to diagnose COPD at an early stage.
- Explain methods to assess the severity of disease, including the GOLD guidelines for staging COPD.
- List recommended approaches for smoking cessation.
- Review appropriate pharmacologic therapy for mild through severe COPD and for acute exacerbations.
- Summarize the appropriate use of pulmonary rehabilitation, oxygen treatment, and surgery in patients with COPD.
Target Audience Primary care physicians, physician assistants, registered nurses, and nurse practitioners interested in the treatment of COPD.
