 Understanding the Overlap Between Asthma and COPD

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this continuing medical education activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Differentiate Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and asthma on the basis of clinical and physiological features.

  • Identify how differences in airway inflammation impact response to treatment in COPD and asthma.

  • Describe clinical features that guide decision making in management of COPD.

  • Assess the smoking status of patients with respiratory and/or cardiovascular symptoms.

  • Assure that smoking cessation counseling and therapy are readily available for patient referral.

  • Identify symptoms that suggest depression in the COPD patient.

  • Recognize weight loss as a potentially severe complication in the COPD patient.
